An unforgettable gravel journey through the Swiss Alps🇹🇭

Set off on an exceptional gravel journey, from Geneva on the shores of Lake Geneva to Morcote on the shores of Lake Lugano, crossing some of Switzerland’s most stunning landscapes. This bikepacking route takes you on nearly 1,000 kilometers of adventure — along lakesides, through pastures, over spectacular mountain passes, and into postcard-perfect villages.

From the shores of Lake Geneva, the route follows Lausanne before climbing into the first hills around Chùtel-Saint-Denis and Gros Plané, then descends into the emblematic region of GruyÚre. The scenery becomes more alpine as you approach Fribourg and Bern, then opens onto the peaks surrounding Thun and Interlaken, between turquoise lakes and snow-capped summits.

Climbing enthusiasts will be thrilled: BrĂŒnig Pass, Pragel Pass, Kunkel Pass, SchwĂ€galp
names that evoke mountains, effort, and the reward of breathtaking views. Along the way you’ll discover Lucerne, Appenzell, Chur, Davos, and even the suspended lake of Lai da Vons, before reaching the San Bernardino Pass to drop down towards the south.

As a grand finale, the descent into Ticino offers a radical change of atmosphere: Mediterranean vegetation, shaded alleys, and the dolce vita in Lugano before reaching Morcote, a jewel on the lakeshore.

This route is a complete and demanding crossing, designed for bikepacking enthusiasts seeking immersion, variety, and challenge. A true diagonal across Switzerland, off the beaten path, blending culture, nature, and adventure.

Level and experience required

With 1,000 kilometers and almost 20,000 meters of climbing, the Gravel across Switzerland challenge requires solid cycling practice – particularly gravel – as well as good physical fitness. While no section is dangerous, some are quite demanding, so it is recommended to feel comfortable on your bike and to be used to riding on varied terrain.

Duration to plan for the challenge

There is no strict time limit for the challenge – it can be done at your own pace. Consistency is an important part of the experience, and this daily regularity is what defines the different levels of achievement (see the challenge page for more details).

As a reference, a rider who regularly practices gravel and already has bikepacking experience should plan around 10 days to complete the full route.

WHEN TO GO ?

You can take on this challenge whenever you like, as there is no fixed start date. Since the route climbs to 2,000 m on mountain trails (without snow clearing), it is generally rideable from mid-May to mid-October (depending on the year and weather conditions, which should always be checked carefully). The best period is undoubtedly mid-June to mid-September.

ACCOMMODATION

The challenge is designed as a self-supported journey, meaning no outside assistance and carrying all the gear you need. You can sleep in hotels, under the stars with a sleeping bag (though it can get cold in Switzerland), or choose any variation in between (tents, bivvy, guesthouses, etc.). Please pay attention to the rules regarding wild camping in Switzerland, and respect them (see the guidelines on the Swiss Touring Club website).
